The Use of Upholstered Benches, Bench Seating and Contract Furniture in Your Home

When you go to a restaurant, club or bar and you sit down with your friends on an odd-shaped seat which curves around the edge of the room or booth you've probably never thought twice about how it has been designed and made, although in some cases I'm sure you've thought it looks very stylish and have also thought it is exceedingly comfortable.

Now, if you live in a home like mine which has lots of nooks and crannies and doesn't have uniform or square rooms (I am fortunate to live in an older house), finding the right furniture that will fit perfectly in to your home can be hard and often you are left with space in a room that is wasted (or used as a dumping ground for other items!).

After visiting a bar with some friends and seeing some exquisite leather upholstered benches I asked the owner where he acquired such bench seating and he told me it was contract furniture which is bespoke and made to fit. Apparently there is a growing industry for upholstered benches and there are many B2B companies selling this sort of contract furniture.

He also told me there were two types, platform base and sprung base:

o Platform base seating uses the same style frame, foams and upholstery as the sprung base seating but without springs and so it is firmer to sit on. o Sprung base seating is softer than platform base, constructed using serpentine springs covered with fire retardant foams and then upholstered. The frame is made of sustainable ply and a plinth of choice. Or alternatively on turned wooden legs or metal legs which may look more in keeping with some interiors. Craftwood Interiors guarantee these frames for 10 years.

In both instances the construction is designed for severe contract use and both foams and covers, whether leather, fabric or faux hide, meet CRIB 5 fire retardancy standards.

Upholstered benching is ideal for a home such as mine because not only can it mould around my odd shaped rooms, but can add some valuable extra seating. Another sofa wouldn't necessarily fit or be desirable, so bench seating would be perfect as the comfort factor is kept too!

Often upholstered benches come with supportive armrests and an integral back and because they are upholstered, they are soft and plush to sit down on and contour your body ergonomically. Due to this comfort it makes them perfect for most rooms in your house, such as the hall, so you can sit down when removing footwear or just collapse after a hard day at work!

As well as comfort and providing extra seating for any room, one of the main reasons I was initially attracted to them was because of their flair and addition of elegance to any room. This is partly down to their bespoke shapes and curves and the variety of materials and finishes they can crafted from meaning they can fit in with the current styling of your house.

After reasoning, to get it looking as it did in the club I visited, I wouldn't be able to make something myself and after scouring the internet for companies that produce bespoke bench seating, upholstered benches and contract furniture as I had seen I quickly realised there were few B2C companies that would produce what I wanted to suit my budget.

On this basis, I will keep on looking for the perfect design, but for the time being I'm just going to have to visit my favourite bar and enjoy a glass of wine there!
